Settlement in the Gates County area began in 1660. Residents of early rural communities made their livelihoods by farming and lumbering, just as they do today.
Gates County was founded in 1779, when the state legislature passed an act taking areas of Chowan, Hertford, and Perquimans Counties.

It received its name from General Horatio Gates, a royal soldier of the English Army who sympathized with the Americans and joined forces with the American troops in the Revolutionary war. When Gates County was established, General Gates was at the height of his military career.
