History

From the days of paleo-Indians through colonial settlement and into more recent times, fascinating glimpses of the past are captured throughout the Albemarle-Pamlico region.

Here you'll find Bath, North Carolina's oldest town and hideout for Blackbeard the Pirate, and the "original" Washington, an historic riverfront town that was the first city in the U.S. to name itself in honor of George Washington. There's also Somerset Place, the only restored plantation in the state to emphasize the lives of slaves, and Lake Mattamuskeet Lodge, which once housed huge pumps that drained the lake so its bed could be used for cropland. Looking into the more distant past, Pettigrew State Park displays millenia-old artifacts from the Native American cultures that flourished here before European settlement.
