TOURING TARBOROStarting from The Grove the walking tour map leads the way through the 45-block Historic District, featuring architectural jewels from the late 18th through the early 20th Centuries. From simple Georgian frame structures through the full-blown Queen Anne mansions of Main Street, Tarboro offers visitors a step back in time. Downtown Main Street offers a charming view of late 19th Century commercial properties, restored in the 1980’s through a National Trust program. Shops feature gifts, apparel and antiques. Several restaurants favored by local residents provide a wide range of luncheon treats. The walking tour also highlights the 1760 Town Common, with monuments to Louis Wilson, Henry Lawson Wyatt (CSA d. 1861) and others; the 1840 Cotton Press, a wonderful machine used for baling cotton; Calvary Episcopal Churchyard, a beautiful botanical collection begun c. 1840. Tarboro has several fine B&B establishments, enabling visitors to truly get to know the town.
